Walk to Mordor 2025 – The Plan

Hi Friends! I mentioned on Bluesky in December that I was thinking about attempting to walk to Mordor and then posting about it here on my blog, alongside brief analyses of a passage, character, event, et cetera relevant to where I was on the walk.

Well, here we are in January 2025 and I’m ready to go.

My Plan to Walk to Mordor

I am using a guide from Nerd Fitness for how far it is to walk to Mordor (roughly 1779 km) as well as how far each “section” of this walk is. Thankfully, they still have the spreadsheet available, which you can find via a link on their blog. This spreadsheet does mean I have to manually input my distance for each day – unfortunately, the app I used once for walking to Mordor is no longer functional. But that’s okay! I will be using my distance as tracked by my Apple Watch and will be updating the spreadsheet at least once a week.

My intent is to provide an official blog post update once a month, though this may end up changing depending on how quickly things are going. Regardless of what happens here, though, you’ll be able to follow my journey a little more closely on Bluesky. You can find me as @jessinrivendell.bsky.social there – though I warn you that I can be a little less formal on there. Oh who are we kidding, I can bet quite chaotic!

How Long Will My Journey Be?

I have no idea how long this journey will take me – getting to Rivendell is just over 700 km according to the spreadsheet, and if I were to walk 5 km a day, it would take roughly 146 days, which would take me into late May counting from January 1st.

Since walking to Mordor is 1779 km, if I walk 5 km a day, it will take me 355 days roughly to get there – which means I’ll reach Mordor in December this year if I keep that pace. Of course, as we all know, things don’t necessarily go according to plan. For instance, I don’t know if I’ll be able to walk 5km every day. In fact, I’m already behind if you’re counting by that metric!

Moving Forward

So, dear reader, before I leave you I’d like you to answer two questions for me:

When do you think I will complete my walk to Mordor?

Should I walk both there and back again?

Ah, it appears one does not simply walk into Mordor and you’ll have to put in the work! I’ll say you’ll be in Mordor.. January of 2026. Well, it certainly can’t be a one-way trip, so returning (at least to Rivendell!) should be a given. 🤭

Yes, at first I thought this will be simple but quickly discovered it wouldn’t be! Certainly a lot of hikes in the summertime are going to be necessary for this. If I go back to Rivendell — looking at just over 3000 km for the whole thing!
